The structure for Radial Drilling Machine (or radial arm drill press) mainly consists of Column, Transmission System, Radial Arm, Working Table, Machine Base, Headstock, Electrical System and etc. The radial arm mounted on a vertical column, allowing the drill head (headstock) to move horizontally along the arm and rotate around the column. The ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) for Radial Drilling Machine is ISO 2423 : 1982 (Acceptance Conditions for Radial Drilling Machines with the Arm Adjustable in Height – Testing of Accuracy). The Chinese National Standard for Radial Arm Drill Press is GB/T 4017-1997.
The ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) for Vertical Drilling Machine is ISO 2773 : 2024 (Test Conditions for Pillar Type Vertical Drilling Machines – Testing of Accuracy). The Chinese National Standard for Column Drilling Machine is GB/T 4018-1997.
Because the Column Type Vertical Drilling Machines with compact size for machining small workpieces, and the Radial Arm Drilling Machines with Large size for machining heavy duty big workpieces, as a result, the price for Vertical Drilling Machine is cheaper than Radial Arm Drilling Machine.

The Radial Drilling Machine is strongly fixed inside of Wooden Case.
The Wooden Case can't be reversed or inclined, it also can't strongly stroke when lifting this machine.

Checking if the gravity center is correct when lifting, and put machine to go down shall be slowly and smoothly to the ground.
Before hoisting the Vertical Drilling Machine, please pay full attention to the sign outside of Wooden Case (to check where the wire cable shall be placed and where the gravity center is). The crate must not be reversed or inclined, and it also must not be strongly stroked when lifting this machine. Lifting must at slow speed and also to check if the gravity center is correct.
Because the small size of bottom and high size of height for this column drilling machine, therefore, to move this machine by roller is forbidden.

In order to maintain Radial drilling machines and vertical drilling machines well, you need to do regular cleaning, regular lubrication of transmission system, check gears, spindle box, electrical system and etc., Do not overload the machine, to ensure the drilling machine is in a stable and safe environment.
Before operation this Radial Drilling Machine, please make sure to maintenance it as per the stipulation of the operation manual.
Regular lubrication and timely oil exchange is required.
7.11 Cleaning using cotton yarn or towel and lubricating of the rock ram guide way surface, outer column and lead screw etc. are necessary.
Seal ring at both side of the big hole shall be disassembled and the felt shall be cleaned regularly in order to avoid dust or chip comes into the guide way surface.
7.12 Please do not move out too much the spindle quill when disassemble tool cutters or tools. Striking spindle with big force is strictly prohibited.
In order to protect the spindle taper hole, substandard tool taper shall not be allowed to use, meanwhile spindle taper hole and tool taper must be kept cleaning.
7.13 The column and the spindle box must be in clamping status when machining, whether for small cutting or for small hole drilling.
7.14 Because too much frequently tapping job will damage the electric motor and relevant parts such as gears etc.
As a result, eight times per minute for hole tapping is recommended.
7.15 Please remember that actual cutting torque and feed resistance shall not be over this machine's maximum value when choose cutting data.
Besides, material hardness of workpiece, cutting performance and sharp of tool cutter etc. also shall be considered, as they will influence cutting force.
7.16 Although the strengthening spindle with enough strong rigidity has been used on this Radial Drilling Machine, but boring bog hole or facing big sunk hole with single boring insert is not allowed. Instead, guiding device or fixture supporting to the tool holder and multi tool inserts shall be used otherwise the spindle accuracy will be lost.
7.21 To Lubrication this Vertical Drilling Machine is very important. Daily Lubrication work as per these requirements of the operation manual is necessary.
Otherwise, transmission parts and bearings will be damaged.
7.22 Over permitted cutting feed range is not allowed. Because High speed for spindle with big cutting feed is not good to the machine.
7.23 Because the drill bits with118 degree angle features big cutting force but quick wear-out, so the diameter and roughness of holes is not enough good after drilling, therefore, regrinding its edges particularly for the big diameter drills is necessary.
It is better to use two different angles for the machining of cast iron material (Second angle could be 70 degree).
7.24 Please Spot facer with three edges is proffered for the spot facing machining, using a normal drill for spot facing job will cause vibration. However, it will have a better result for the spot facing machining if reducing the rear angle of the normal drill with two different angles and going down the cutting speed and feed rate.
7.25 The Temperature of main motor will be increased much quickly when tapping due to frequently motor direction to be changed. Therefore, too much rapid and continuous tapping shall be avoided. Eight times per minutes of tapping is recommended. If the motor is too hot temperature, it needs to stop this Drilling Machine then to for cooling.
7.26 Please turn off the coolant system when mounting or dismounting tools, clamping or adjusting workpiece or measuring workpiece, as coolant is not necessary during this period.
7.27 Because Gears are to be used for spindle and feed system, so it is not allowed to change spindle speed or change cutting feed rate when machine is working, otherwise, it will damage gears, shafts or relevant parts.
7.28 To keep Dry inside of the electric box and regularly removing dustiness are necessary. It is forbidden to us gasoline or kerosene or diesel oil to clean electric components. We suggest to use those no erosion and not be easily burned liquid such as carbon tetrachloride etc.
General Speaking, the Radial Drilling Machines are ideal for machining Large, Heavy Duty workpieces with versatile positioning. But the Vertical Drilling Machines are compact, precise and economical for repeat machining of small and Lightweight workpieces. The choice for these drilling machines depends on different kinds of raw materials, workpiece size, required precision and related technical requirement.
