What is a Metal Lathe

Metal Lathe is one of the most important machine tools which are widely used in the field of Workshop, Training School, Factory, Automotive, Ship-building, Aerospace and Industry. It operates on the principle of rotating the work-piece around a stationary fixed cutting tool. The cutting tool is feed into the work-piece which rotates about its own axis to remove unwanted parts of the work-piece, so causing the work-piece to form the desired shape.

What are Different Types of Metal Lathe

Depending on the industrial history as well as characteristics of the machining applications, the conventional metal cutting lathes can be divided into several types: small size of Mini Lathe, middle size of Engine Lathe (Center Lathes), Heavy Duty Universal Lathe, Oil Country Lathes (oilfield lathe machine) with Bigger Spindle Bore and Double Chucks System, Vertical lathes and etc. Metal Lathes are widely used to remove excess material from the metal work-piece in circular forms so that the work-piece will conform to the desired style and size from the designs and blueprints when the machining process is completed.

Engine Lathe

This kind of horizontal turning manual lathe machines are characterized by their infinitely variable speed range and robust construction, powerful motor and versatility. For more than 20 years, such engine lathes have been among the tried and tested bestsellers of our conventional lathe machines. In combination with the position indicator and integrated function of the constant cutting speed, you achieve a superior surface quality when facing. A high-quality quick-change tool-holder system also lessens non-productive time and costs.

Universal Lathe

With this Heavy Duty Universal Lathe Machine, you can machining really large turning diameters and work-piece lengths. This manual metalworking lathe machine series is the solution for conventional machining of work-pieces up to 16000 mm in length and over 2080 mm in diameter. The particularly wide and heavily ribbed machine bed takes heavy work-piece weights. Powerful motors drive the main spindle via a finely adjustable multi-disc clutch. The rapid traverse in the support is particularly effective with large bed lengths and the heavy tailstock is also moved with a motor drive.

Oil Country Lathe

Such kind of Oil Country Lathe (also called: Oilfield Lathe) has Larger Spindle Bore and 2 units of Chuck. This metal lathe machine is mainly used for processing the internal and external threads of the pipes. It is a heavy weight range of ultra large capacity conventional Oil Country Lathe Machine ideal for machining large shafts, pipes, disk and rolls. A variety of alternative specifications including Extra Bigger Spindle Bore options make this Pipe Threading Lathe ideally suited to a wide range of industries, including oil & gas, renewable engergy, nuclear, mining, aerospace, automotive and many more.

How do I Choose a Metal Lathe

Our machine experts are willing to share these factors of what you should consider when choosing a good metal lathe.

FAQ Guide for Metal Lathe

  • What is the HS Code for Metal Lathe ?

The "HS Code" is the short for Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System. It's a list of numbers used by Global Customs Organization to classify a product.  The HS Code (Harmonized System Code ) for Metal Lathe (Metalworking Lathe) or Manual Lathe Machine is 845899.
  • What is the Maximum Swing Over Bed, Swing Over Cross Slide and Swing Over Gap on a Lathe ?

Lathe is called mother of all machines, it can be used to machining many kinds of work-pieces, even odd shaped jobs. Lathe machines are widely used in workshop, industry factory, power plant, educational training school, aerospace, vessel ship and repair work. When you are going to buy a proper size of good lathe machine with correct specifications, there are several questions to ask yourself before you begin the process. Some of important technical questions are obvious as bellowing:

    -  What is the " Maximum Swing Over Bed " on the Lathe ?
    -  What is the "Maximum Swing Over Gap" on the Lathe ?
    -  What is the " Maximum Swing Over Cross Slide" on the Lathe Machine ?

    -  What is the " Distance Between Centers" on the Lathe Machine ?

Height of center line is the "Center Height".  This "Center Height" also is the key factor to form different swing sizes.

    Center-Height-on-Lathe-01

The "Max. Swing" is first considered factor since it determines the diameter allowance for work-piece. The lathe machine's "maximum swing" refers to the largest diameter part that can be spun in the chuck without mechanical interference with guarding, cross-slide, or other machine components located near the chucking area. And the "Max. Swing" and the "Distance Between Centers (Admit Between Center)" also will define the working capacity of turning lathe machines.

     Definition-of-Lathe-Swing-02

    Maximum Swing Over Bed
The "Maximum Swing Diameter Over the Bed": This indicates the maximum diameter of the work-piece that could revolve over the bed ways. This means the maximum diameter that can be mounted without striking the bed. Swing over bed is also swing over Z-axis guide way (longitudinal guide way).

    Maximum Swing Over Gap
Some lathes have what is commonly known as a "Gap Bed". There is a section of the bed just in front of the head stock that can be removed at will to accommodate larger diameter work-piece. When this section is removed and a "Gap" is left.

As a result, this kind of turning lathe machines have the design of gap on bed to allow work-piece bigger than swing over cross slide. But this gap is created by removing gap block and take some distance of Z-axis guide way. So only for some special flange type work-piece then the customer will need gap on the bed. Normally, lathe machine with gap is for facing machining.

Distance Between Centers (Admit Between Center)
The "Distance Between Centers" :  This expresses the maximum length of job (work-piece) that can be mounted between the lathe centers (such as between head stock and tailstock).

    Distance-Between-Centers-on-Metal-Lathe-05

    Maximum Swing Over Cross Slide
The "Maximum Swing Diameter Over the Cross Slide":  It indicates the maximum diameter of the work-piece that could rotate over the carriage. This means it would be the largest diameter that will clear the cross slide on top of the carriage.

The "Swing Over Cross Slide" is diameter allowance upon the cross slide (or worktable). When work-piece is long and cross slide has to go through the work-piece for outside turning, such as still roller, pipe and etc. Then it is necessary to consider the "Swing Over Cross Slide". General speaking, The "swing over cross slide" will be smaller than "swing over bed".

The Standard Limited Warranty Period for Metalworking Lathes is about 1 year since from the date that it is shipped.

  • What is the packing type for metal lathe ?

Many machines manufacturer factories mainly to use wooden case packing for metal lathes, and use wooden pallet packing for heavy duty universal lathes.
  • What are the rules for metal lathe ?

Here are some safety rules to follow when using a metal lathe:
    -Personal protective equipment
Wear certified safety glasses, ear protection, and sturdy footwear. You can also wear a dust mask to protect yourself from the dust produced by filing and sanding. Avoid wearing gloves, loose clothing, jewelry, or other dangling objects. If you have long hair, pull it back or use a hair covering. Never wear loose-fitting clothing or jewelry while operating a lathe.

    -Remove entanglement hazards
Keep the floor free of obstructions and tie up any loose clothing or sleeves.

    -Secure the workpiece
Center-drill the work deeply enough to support it while it's turning, and then secure and clamp it.

    -Use the lathe safely
Make sure the lathe has a start/stop button and an emergency stop button within easy reach. Follow the job specifications for the speed, feed, and depth of cut. Always stop the lathe before making adjustments, and don't change spindle speeds until the lathe has come to a complete stop.

    -Maintain the lathe
Regularly clean and wipe down the external moving parts of the machine, including the carriage, cross slide, and tool post. Check for and clean away any coolant or swarf under the carriage and tailstock.
  • How much does a good metal lathe cost ?

The Metal Lathe Machines price is range from a few hundred bucks to tens of thousands. It all depends on what you need. Normally, The price for Mini Lathe is less than engine lathe, The price for middle size of engine Lathe is less than heavy duty universal lathe machine.
  • How to maintain a metal lathe

Because Metal Working Lathe machines are susceptible to wear and tear when they are used, they require frequently maintenance. Regular Maintenance ensures lathes are in good working condition. There are several things to be considered when maintaining a metal working lathe machine. Maintenance should ideally happen every working 40 hours to ensure it functions well.

    --Use lathe board
Lathe board helps hold materials from falling. When the operator is changing components of the lathe machine, such as chucks, centerpieces, or the workpiece, and they slip, the lathe board holds them.

--Keep tools off the lathe ways
Any tools necessary while working with the lathe machine should be placed on a separate table and not on the lathe ways.

    --Lubricate
The lathe machine is primarily made of metal components. Lathe operators should always ensure that the machine is well lubricated before operating. Failure to do so could lead to severe compromise in the precision of the metal cutting tools.

    --Clean spindle tapers
Spindle tapers can experience axial or radial runout. Axial runout occurs when the spindle rotates outside its axis. Radial runout is an error that occurs in the motion perpendicular to the spindle axis. The spindle tapers should be inspected and cleaned with a soft, lint-free cloth when tools are being changed.

    --Clean dust
Operators need to wipe off the dust on the machine, workpieces, and way wipes. The way wipes should be replaced once they are worn out.

    --Protect from rust
Rust is always a big factor to consider when working with metal lathe machines. Proper protection has to be made for lathes. Rust can cause weakening of the lathe machine structure, corrosion, and damaged parts. To guard against rust, lathe machines should be cleaned regularly and coated with oils that inhibit corrosion.

    --Calibrate the precision
After maintenance of the lathe machine, some of the settings may have been tampered with. Recalibration of the lathe is recommended after maintenance. Regular maintenance and calibration also result in the production of accurate workpieces.
  • What is the Lifespan of a metal lathe ?

The well-maintained metal lathe machine can work about 10 to 30 years, depending on several factors. The lifespan can vary based on the type of lathe, its usage, and how well it's cared for. Heavy-duty industrial lathes that are used continuously in high-demand settings may have a shorter lifespan, typically around 10-15 years. On the other hand, lathes used in small workshops or for occasional projects can easily work 20-30 years or more.
  • What is the delivery time for metal lathe ?

General Speaking, the delivery time for small size of Bench Lathe is about 1 month, the delivery time for middle size of engine lathe is about 12 month,  the delivery time for big size of heavy duty universal lathe is about 34 month.
  • What can a metal lathe do?

Metal lathes are used in many industries, including automotive, aerospace, machine shops and etc. Metal lathes can perform a variety of machining processes, including:
-Cutting: Metal lathes can cut common industrial metals like aluminum, iron, and steel.
-Turning: Metal lathes can turn metal into cups, lampstands, chess pieces, and more.
-Drilling: Metal lathes can drill holes into metal.
-Sanding: Metal lathes can sand metal.
-Knurling: Metal lathes can knurl metal.
